Do LED candles provide enough light to read by?
That depends on your expectations. LED candles are ambient lighting — they are not designed to be reading lamps.
The brightness of LED candles: An average LED candle provides approximately 5-15 lumens. In comparison, a reading lamp provides 300-500 lumens. Therefore, you cannot comfortably read with a single LED candle.
However: With a group of multiple LED candles together — for example, a set of 5 pillar candles on a tray — you can create more light. Some rechargeable LED candles have a bright setting that provides significantly more light than a wax candle.
What LED candles ARE for:
- Ambient lighting on the table during dinner
- Background light in the living room
- Night light in the hallway or bathroom
- Decoration in lanterns, on mantels, in gardens
Do you want atmosphere and reading light? Combine LED candles with a dimmable ceiling lamp or floor lamp. This way, you have the warmth of candlelight and enough light to read.
